Empire star Jussie Smollett made headlines last week after being brutally attacked in Chicago as what is being investigated as a hate crime. According to reports, the actor was beaten up by two white men in a ski mask in the early morning hours of January 29, 2019. While being attacked, the men proceeded to throw an unknown substance on the actor and tie a noose (rope) around his neck. According to Jussie, the men starting saying racial and homophobic slurs at him as he was leaving from Subway before they started attacking him.
Fortunately, Jussie was able to fight off the men and take himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. As the men were fleeing from the scene, they started yelling: This is MAGA country. Now according to TMZ 8 days before the horrific attack, a letter threatening Jussie’s life was sent to FOX Studios In Chicago where they film the show Empire. After receiving the letter, FOX offered to give the star extra security, but Jussie refused because he felt like having around the clock security would be too intrusive in his life. Which I completely understand because we all deserve to have personal space.
So of course when I heard this story, I was shocked and horrified. Not only because I watch Empire and I love his character on the show, but because this behavior is unacceptable. No human being or living creature should ever have to go through something like this. Because no matter your race, or who you choose to love, everyone is equal.
It’s sad to think that even in this day in age, there are people that have so much hate in their hearts. As if all of the things that Martin Luther King Jr and other civil right activist died for was all in vain. Which is what makes my blood boil because what gives you the right to dictate how someone chooses to live their life. Because whether you know the person or not, everyone deserves to live their own genuine life.
So whether people believe this story or not, it goes to show that this country is far from equality. That some people still judge others on the color of their skin, and not the content of this character. Because no matter who someone is or their sexual orientation, you can never take away their accomplishments and their dignity.
My prayers go out to the Smollett family and the rest of the Empire cast. I hope that the people that did this to him get caught and get the maximum sentence. And I hope from all of this, people will start to learn to love more instead of hate. Because having all this hatred in our hearts, can never make this country equal.
